Genentech breaks ground on its Hillsboro expansion

Genentech has begun construction on a $750 million expansion of its manufacturing campus in Hillsboro, Oregon. The project will add device fill-finish capabilities to the company's manufacturing network, with commercial operations planned for 2031. Groundbreaking took place on 28 September 2026; the new facility is a construction project, rather than capacity already supplying medicines.
Expansion of an established campus
The company said the development adds 211,000 square feet and doubles the size of the existing site. Hillsboro has been part of Genentech's network since 2006, with activities including drug product manufacturing, packaging and distribution. The expansion builds on those operations while adding capabilities for medicine delivery devices and combination products.
Genentech describes the new facility as flexible enough to support high- and low-volume filling for medicines in oncology, neurology and immunology. This is a statement about the intended manufacturing capability. The announcement does not establish a launch date for any particular medicine or guarantee a specific treatment outcome. Construction and the preparation for commercial operations remain separate stages of the project.
Employment and planned operating roles
The company expects approximately 250 additional manufacturing jobs once the expansion is operational. It also anticipates around 200 construction jobs during development. These figures describe different forms of employment and should not be presented as one existing permanent workforce. Recruitment for operating roles is expected over the coming years.
- Filling and inspection.
- Device assembly and packaging.
- Cold storage and quality control.
The planned roles combine manufacturing expertise with skills in automation, robotics and digital systems. Genentech also intends to use a digital representation of the facility for monitoring and improvement. These plans describe the company's intended operating model; they do not constitute a report of results already measured at the new building.
Part of a wider manufacturing network
Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, links the Hillsboro development to its broader investment in domestic research, development and manufacturing. The new construction is a specific project within that wider programme. Its announced investment, floor area and anticipated staffing have different units and timeframes, so they should remain separate when assessing progress.
The company established its Hillsboro campus two decades ago and cited the area's workforce, infrastructure and manufacturing experience in explaining the expansion. The project now moves through construction toward its stated commercial operating target. Further milestones will determine when the planned capability becomes available.
